    Description

Custom Diamond Turning Tools for Contact Lenses, IOLs & Spectacle Lenses

Single-point diamond turning (SPDT) is now a core process in modern ophthalmic manufacturing, used to produce high-precision contact lenses, intraocular lenses (IOLs), and complex spectacle lenses. To support the strict requirements of this industry—from direct machining of polymers to the production of high-quality molds—we provide a full line of high-grade monocrystalline diamond cutting tools.

Litian Century manufactures custom single-crystal diamond turning tools for ultra-precision ophthalmic lens production. Our tools support the machining of contact lenses, intraocular lenses (IOLs), spectacle lenses and precision lens mold components.

Available in solid-shank and insert configurations, each tool can be manufactured according to your application, lens material, machine interface, required nose radius and surface quality target. Natural diamond and selected synthetic diamond options are available to balance edge quality, wear resistance and production cost.

Diamond Turning Tools for Ophthalmic Lens Manufacturing

Our diamond tools are built for sub-micron form accuracy and nanometer-level surface quality. They perform especially well when creating complex geometries like aspheric, diffractive, and freeform surfaces used in progressive addition lenses and advanced EDOF IOLs.

Litian Century ophthalmic diamond turning tools are developed for direct machining of compatible optical polymers and ultra-precision machining of non-ferrous mold materials. Typical workpiece materials include:

◆  PMMA and other optical-grade polymers

    ◆  Hydrophobic acrylic materials

    ◆  Hydrophilic hydrogel materials

    ◆  Nickel-phosphorus plated mold components

    ◆  Aluminum alloy mold components

Material suitability should be confirmed according to the cutting condition, lens material state and machine configuration.

    Spectacle Lens Turning

Diamond tools are used during the production of prescription, aspheric, freeform and progressive spectacle lenses. Accurate tool geometry helps maintain the designed lens profile while producing a consistent surface for subsequent finishing or polishing.

Litian Century can customize the tool radius, insert geometry and shank configuration according to the lens material, generator setup and required machining process.

    Contact Lens Machining

Contact lens production may involve direct turning of the lens material or precision machining of the mold used to form the lens. In both processes, tool nose radius, cutting-edge quality, rake angle and waviness directly affect the finished lens geometry and surface condition.

Custom roughing and finishing tool requirements can be reviewed according to the customer’s material and machining parameters.

    IOL Diamond Turning

Intraocular lens manufacturing requires stable tool geometry and a sharp, consistent cutting edge. Litian Century provides custom diamond turning tools for IOL optical surface machining and related mold applications.

Customers can specify the lens material, required optical geometry, machine interface and dimensional tolerances when requesting a tool design.

    Surface Quality and Machining Performance

The performance of an ophthalmic diamond tool depends on the cutting-edge condition, tool geometry, workpiece material, machine accuracy and machining parameters.

Litian Century tools are engineered to support:

    • ◆  Low-waviness cutting edges, typically below 80 nm for applicable tool designs

    • ◆  Machined surface roughness down to Ra ≤0.02 μm under suitable conditions

    • ◆  Accurate reproduction of spherical, aspheric and freeform surfaces

    • ◆  Reduced polishing requirements

    • ◆  Stable surface quality across repeated production

    • ◆  Longer usable tool life through suitable diamond and geometry selection

Actual machining results depend on the lens material, machine condition, setup accuracy, coolant strategy, cutting speed, feed rate and depth of cut. Performance targets should therefore be confirmed for each application rather than treated as universal values.

Tool Design Based on Your Machine and Process

Ophthalmic machines and toolholders may use different interfaces, offsets and insert geometries. To avoid installation and alignment problems, Litian Century can manufacture the tool according to:

    • ◆  Machine brand and model

    • ◆  Toolholder drawing or interface dimensions

    • ◆  Solid-shank or insert system

    • ◆  Workpiece and lens material

    • ◆  Roughing or finishing operation

    • ◆  Required nose radius and tolerance

    • ◆  Rake and clearance angles

    • ◆  Target surface roughness and form accuracy

If an existing tool performs poorly, customers may also provide the current tool drawing, used tool sample or machining issue description for technical evaluation.

    Quality Inspection

Each ophthalmic diamond turning tool is inspected before shipment. The cutting edge is checked under 800× magnification to identify edge defects that could affect machining quality.

Litian Century’s independent quality control process covers raw material selection, in-process inspection and finished-tool verification. Learn more about our diamond tool R&D and quality control.

For applications requiring specific inspection data, dimensional tolerances or approval drawings, include these requirements with your RFQ so they can be reviewed before production.
