    What makes these tools special?

An ultra‑precision single‑point diamond turning tool uses a single‑crystal diamond as its cutting edge for machining at the highest precision levels. The nose radius can be tailored anywhere from 0.001 mm to 100 mm, and the form accuracy can reach better than 0.03 μm. Geometric details are designed flexibly to meet specific application needs.

Where Are Diamond Turning Tools Used in the Electro-Optics Industry?

These tools are mainly for ultra‑precision turning of non‑ferrous metals and polymers. They deliver mirror‑like finishes, giving work pieces outstanding dimensional accuracy and surface smoothness. They’re especially vital for creating micro‑structured surfaces—think diffractive optics, Fresnel structures, and lens arrays.

Litian Century develops precision diamond tools for the ultra-precision machining of electro-optical components. Our tooling solutions are used to manufacture mobile phone lens molds, infrared lenses and mirrors, optical film drums, and high-precision metal parts. Each tool can be customized according to the workpiece material, component geometry, machine interface, surface finish requirement, and machining conditions.

    Mobile Phone Lens Molds

Camera resolution and image quality depend heavily on the dimensional accuracy and surface quality of the lens mold. Even minor form errors or surface defects can affect the performance of the finished optical lens.

Our single crystal diamond tools are designed for the ultra-precision machining of mobile phone lens molds, helping manufacturers achieve accurate profiles, sharp features, and optical-quality finishes. We work closely with machine tool manufacturers and customers to match the tool geometry, machine interface, and cutting parameters to specific mold requirements.

    Infrared Lenses and Mirrors

Infrared optics are widely used in thermal imaging, defense, aerospace, automotive sensing, security systems, and industrial inspection. These applications require lenses and mirrors with precise geometries and consistently low surface roughness.

Because infrared optical materials vary significantly in hardness, brittleness, and abrasiveness, the diamond tool must be selected for the specific material and machining objective. Litian Century provides optimized tool geometries and diamond grades to support stable cutting, longer tool life, fewer tool changes, and reliable surface quality throughout the machining cycle.

    Optical Film Drums

Optical film drums are used to produce large-area microstructured films for displays, lighting, imaging, and other optical applications. During production, diamond tools machine fine grooves or microstructures onto the drum surface, which is then used to replicate the pattern onto film in high volumes.

The cutting edge must maintain its geometry and sharpness across the entire drum surface—and, in some processes, through multiple machining passes. Litian Century offers natural and synthetic diamond tool options engineered for high wear resistance, consistent groove geometry, and extended service life in optical film drum machining.

    High-Precision Metal Parts

Single crystal diamond tools can produce exceptional dimensional accuracy and mirror-like surface finishes on compatible non-ferrous metals and plated materials. When used with an ultra-precision machine equipped with an air-bearing spindle, these tools are suitable for manufacturing high-accuracy components for aerospace, defense, electronics, optical, and scientific applications.

Typical machinable materials include aluminum alloys, copper alloys, brass, and electroless nickel-plated surfaces. With the correct tool geometry and cutting parameters, diamond turning can reduce or eliminate secondary polishing while delivering excellent form accuracy, low surface roughness, and repeatable machining performance.

    1. Application Review

We review the workpiece material, coating, optical surface, component geometry, machine model and required finish.

    2. Geometry Recommendation

Our technical team evaluates the nose radius, tool angles, cutting direction, diamond type, shank design and machine interface.

    3. Drawing Confirmation

A tool drawing or specification is confirmed before production. Any critical tolerances or inspection requirements should be identified at this stage.

    4. Manufacturing and Inspection

The diamond is selected, ground and assembled into the required holder. Tool geometry and cutting-edge condition are inspected before shipment.

    5. Delivery and After-Sales Support

Tools are securely packaged for international shipment. Re-lapping and repair evaluation are available for suitable tool designs.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between natural and synthetic single crystal diamond tools?

Both can be used for ultra-precision optical machining. Selection depends on the required edge geometry, workpiece material, cutting distance, surface requirement and expected tool life. LTCT can recommend a suitable diamond type after reviewing the application.

Can you manufacture tools to match our existing diamond turning machine?

Yes. Custom shank dimensions, cutting height, holder interface and cutting direction are available. Please provide the machine model, holder drawing or existing tool dimensions.

Which tool is suitable for Fresnel and diffractive optical structures?

Sharp-point and micro-grooving tools are commonly used, but the correct tip geometry depends on the pitch, groove depth, included angle, material and tool path. A component drawing is required for final tool design.

Can these tools machine optical polymers directly?

Yes. Suitable optical polymers include PMMA, polycarbonate and other machinable plastics. Tool geometry should be selected according to the polymer, surface shape and required optical finish.

Can single crystal diamond tools machine steel?

Conventional diamond turning is generally unsuitable for ferrous materials because the interaction between iron and diamond can cause rapid tool wear. Steel applications may require ultrasonic-assisted machining or another specialized process. Please provide the steel grade and machining requirements for evaluation.

Can used diamond tools be repaired?

Some tool designs can be re-lapped or repaired, depending on diamond size, edge damage, remaining material and tool geometry. LTCT will inspect the used tool before confirming repair feasibility.
